Otoshidama

So it’s really fun in Japan that every year we get these cute little tiny envelopes and put either ¥500 coin or ¥1000 bill inside and every time you see a little kid or some child that you know you give it to them as a present to make them feel lucky for the new year. This is called Otoshidama.

It’s a traditional customs giving money to children to give some appreciation to them and it’s always fun to see the little kids face light up. I remember when I was little and on our birthday, grandma and grandpa would give you a card with money in it. There was no present. It was just money. And I always look forward to those cards.
